The Bank of Spain Orders Crypto Surveillance

The Governor of the Bank of Spain has ordered a heightened surveillance of the crypto industry which has emerged in popularity rather quickly within the region. It is believed by the governor that the series of risks which he perceives could present itself as an obstacle for the future, needs to be explored by more than just financial institutions-but the general public as a whole.

Cryptocurrency has evolved amongst many business sectors all over the world, and not just within Spain, that we know of. Gaming and gambling platforms are integrating blockchain technology within their online sites, as a way of first of foremost, keeping up with the market, but also providing the security and other benefits cryptocurrency provides. As a result, many gaming and gambling sites such as Roulette sites for CSGO gambling within the past year have been developed and founded due to the technology stability that blockchain provides. While gamblers will be jumping for joy for the greater option and variety cryptocurrency has provided them, Pablo Hernandez has his reasons as to why blockchain needs to be managed better.

Hernandez believes that investors who have been reeled into the world of blockchain overnight, take for granted the investment opportunity that wouldn’t necessarily present itself in the same way. The risk posed by cryptocurrency is not presented within financial markets in general. The existence of the volatile swings in prices and assets, can cause huge overactions that have ripple effects within the trading environments to come. The accumulation and general panic surrounding the stable coins puts stress on the markets, and prominent custody of other assets too.

It is believed that as time goes on, with more and more payments processing on the system, this increases the probability of tensions and delays within regions. Crypto obviously presents a risk to banking sectors as a whole regardless, because more and more industries are evolving with a heavier reliance on cryptocurrency. The increase of direct exposure of banking to the crypto sector increases risks, whether it is liked or not (in terms of financial reputation). Pablo believes that while the risk is very limited as of now, this will most likely further increase as time progresses.

The concerns of further emerging countries which are substituting their currency entirely for cryptocurrency, are a concern also. He believes that this is not a good idea at all. El Salvador is a good example of how cryptocurrency has been substituted entirely and caused monetary autonomy concerns without question. This prevents governments from being able to exercise any liability or control over capital movements, tax regulations and so on.

El Salvador has seen many local risks through their persistence with keeping Bitcoin as their legal tender. The Governor believes Spain will follow in similar footsteps if there is no intervention and regulation within the region. Bitcoin as a tender can have consensus mechanisms to follow, in addition to derailing the climate commitments that have been pledged as a commitment. To manage this, more risk records, and regulations to predict the risks perceived when crypto assets are used and are involved within laundering etc. is difficult-regardless of how well documented the main cryptocurrency assets are (Ethereum, Bitcoin etc).

Even though the governor's call for action will need to be taken in a series of steps and action plans to introduce cryptocurrency sustainably, alongside the local currency tender, many are still optimistic with how far cryptocurrency can take an effect, when concerning Spain's financial system as a whole. Yes, there are notable risks with cryptocurrency, however there are benefits too, which can be a catalyst to new business opportunities for the country, in addition to an improvement to already existing entities.
